The Liturgically Hip are Coming to Barrie
|
On Sunday, November 17,
The Liturgically Hip will be performing at the Gryphon Theatre in Barrie. The
Lit Hip have become well known for their energetic, up-beat performances, which
blend music, dance and the lively spirit of youth.
|
Based in First United
Church, Port Credit, the Lit Hip have travelled widely, both in Canada and
abroad. Whether performing local benefit shows in places such as Walkerton,
Ontario, or bringing their unique and joyful style to the Episcopal Cathedral in
Havana, Cuba, the Lit Hip offer their talents, and the financial proceeds of
their work,

to ministry projects within the communities they visit. Later this
year, the group will be performing at Mississauga's Living Arts Centre, with all
proceeds going to support New Church Development in that region. The November
17 show in Barrie fits in with this philosophy; it will be sponsored by Simcoe
Presbytery , and all the proceeds will support
|
the development of new
congregations in the rapidly expanding Barrie area. According to Arch McCurdy,
Chair of Simcoe Presbytery, "The United Church has got to get into some of these
new areas before we miss our chance".
|
Ken Gallinger, the group's
director, explains "It's really important for the kids to realize that the
church doesn't begin and end with their own congregation. They're really lucky:
they have gobs of talent, lots of support from their congregation, and wonderful
friendships in the group. With all these privileges, they need to know that

stands still -- every piece involves rhythm, dance and the raw energy of about
50 teenagers -- and before shows are over, the audience is usually into it as
well. Gallinger notes: "It's pretty safe to say that no one ever goes home
