* Rainforest destruction, forced relocations, mass polution caused by mineral & oil exploitation by multinational companies, including Shell and Freeport McMoran.

 

* Transmigration of Indonesian settlers sponsered by the government and the World Bank means upt 40% of the population is now Indonesian, & growing!

 

* Supression of Papuan language, music and customs

 

John Rumbiak is the leading human rights activist in West Papua (previously known as Irian Jaya, Indonesia). He was born in Biak in 1962, studied English at Cenderawasih University, and Human Rights Advocacy at Columbia University in New York. After a period as coordinator for studies and advocacy at the Rural Community Development Foundation (YPMD) in Papua, he became the chief spokesperson of ELS-HAM Papua, the Institute for Human Rights Study and Advocacy. ELS-HAM is committed to non-violence and working towards the demilitarization of West Papua, and empowering people through advocacy. Rumbiak has traveled extensively to testify on human rights issues, including to the United Nations commission on Human Rights and the US Congress. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Papua Resource Centre based in New York City.
